  • India Claims Further Strikes: India today asserted that its forces successfully targeted and damaged Pakistani air defense radars and systems at multiple locations. This follows India’s “Operation Sindoor” on Wednesday.
  • Pakistan’s Retaliation Claims: Pakistan claims its forces have retaliated against India’s strikes by targeting and destroying Indian military installations along the Line of Control (LoC), alleging significant casualties (40-50 soldiers) on the Indian side. India has not confirmed these figures.
  • Continued Border Clashes: Heavy exchanges of artillery fire have been reported along the Line of Control (LoC), with both sides accusing the other of initiating the firing and causing casualties.
  • Airspace and Travel Disruptions: Pakistan’s airspace over Lahore and Islamabad remains closed. India has temporarily shut down 27 airports, primarily in the northern and western regions, leading to widespread flight cancellations.
  • International Calls for Restraint: World leaders continue to urge both India and Pakistan to de-escalate the situation and return to diplomatic dialogue.

India-Pakistan Conflict Escalates: Pakistani Military’s Attempted Attacks on Indian Locations (May 7th)

The current surge in tensions was significantly fueled by India’s claim that on the night of May 7th, the Pakistani military attempted to attack 15 Indian locations using drones and missiles. India maintains that its integrated air defense systems successfully intercepted all these attempts. The full list of the targeted locations, as per Indian sources, includes:

  1. Awantipura
  2. Srinagar
  3. Jammu
  4. Pathankot
  5. Amritsar
  6. Kapurthala
  7. Jalandhar
  8. Ludhiana
  9. Adampur
  10. Bhatinda
  11. Chandigarh
  12. Nal
  13. Phalodi
  14. Uttarlai

India stated that these attacks were neutralized, and debris is being recovered as evidence of Pakistan’s aggression. These attempted attacks followed India’s “Operation Sindoor,” which involved missile strikes on alleged terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir earlier on May 7th.

Previous Attacks and Escalation Leading to the Current Crisis

The present war-like situation is the culmination of escalating events that began after the deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22nd. India holds Pakistan responsible for this attack. The timeline of key events includes:

  • April 22nd: A fatal attack on tourists in Pahalgam. India accuses Pakistan-backed militants; Pakistan denies involvement.
  • April 25th – May 6th: Increased military posturing and troop movements reported on both sides. Sporadic cross-border firing along the LoC, with both nations trading accusations of initiating the violence. India claims to have intercepted Pakistani drone incursions.
  • May 7th (Morning): India launches “Operation Sindoor,” conducting missile strikes against alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
  • May 7th (Night): Pakistan reportedly attempts to attack 15 Indian locations with drones and missiles, all claimed to be intercepted by India.

As of Thursday, May 8, 2025, the IPL cricket match scheduled for May 11th in Dharamshala has been moved to Ahmedabad due to the escalating tensions and the closure of the Dharamshala airport following India’s “Operation Sindoor.” There were also concerns about security in Dharamshala due to its proximity to the border.

Additionally, there were initial concerns about the IPL match scheduled for today, May 8th, in Dharamshala between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, but it appears to be going ahead as planned, although with heightened security and some logistical challenges for the teams due to flight disruptions.

Furthermore, a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match scheduled for tonight, May 8th, in Rawalpindi has been postponed due to the rising tensions. Some reports also indicated that a drone attack damaged the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, affecting a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match.

The ongoing exchange of accusations and military actions has created a highly precarious situation in the region. With both nuclear-armed nations engaged in direct confrontation, the international community remains deeply concerned about the potential for further and more devastating escalation. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis are being intensified as the world watches the unfolding events with growing alarm.
